Live Engraving for Retail and Events: Your Questions Answered
Live engraving is a simple way to elevate your in-store experience, whether you are planning a product launch, a seasonal promotion or a special event such as Mother’s Day. It adds a personal, thoughtful element to your offering and gives customers something they will remember long after they leave your shop.
At Inviting Writing, I work with brands, retailers and hospitality businesses across Leicestershire, Leicester, Nottingham and further afield in Birmingham and London, providing live engraving and handwritten personalisation that fits seamlessly into your space and your brand.
If you are considering booking live engraving, here are some of the questions I am most often asked.
Do you require power?
No, my equipment is entirely portable and charged up prior to use, so I can be placed anywhere without the need of being restricted to somewhere close to a power source.
How many items can you engrave?
On average, I can engrave approximately 30 to 50 items per hour, depending on the material and the level of detail required.
If you are expecting a high volume of customers, there are ways to manage this. For example, I can collect names and details during a busy period, such as a drinks reception or peak shopping hours, and then complete the engraving shortly afterwards for customers or guests to collect. This works particularly well for events where you want to keep the experience flowing without long wait times.
What can you engrave?
Most glass and metal items can be engraved. This includes perfume bottles, candle jars, glassware, still drinks bottles and metal lids such as skin care and also mirrors.
Fizzy drinks bottles, such as champagne, cannot be engraved due to the pressure inside the glass. However, they can be beautifully hand-painted as an alternative, which still gives a personalised and high-end finish. Other items such as leather can be personalised with other methods too.
If you have a specific product in mind, I am always happy to test or advise in advance to make sure it engraves well and gives the best possible result.
Do you only offer engraving?
Alongside live engraving, I also offer handwritten services which work beautifully for retail environments, especially during key gifting periods such as Mother’s Day, Christmas and Valentine’s Day.
This can include writing gift tags, cards, envelopes and personalised notes in modern calligraphy. It is a simple addition that makes a purchase feel far more thoughtful and considered. For leather items, there is also a technique known as “hot foiling” where gold or silver foil is applied with a heated pen to items such as luggage tags or keyrings.
How far will you travel?
I am based in Leicestershire and regularly work in Leicester and Nottingham, but I am very happy to travel further afield and regularly work in cities such as Birmingham, Sheffield and London.
Whether your event is elsewhere in the UK or abroad, I can provide a tailored quote including travel, mileage and accommodation if required. If you have a location in mind, just ask and I can advise.
How does it work on the day?
I arrive ahead of your event to set up and ensure everything is ready. During the event, customers can choose their wording and watch their item being engraved, or leave their details and return later to collect their personalised piece.
I work in a calm, professional way that fits naturally into your space, supporting your team and enhancing the overall customer experience. As a former hotel-manager I am very used to customer service at a high level and enjoy speaking with the guests whilst I personalise for them.
Is this suitable for busy retail environments?
Yes, absolutely. Live engraving works particularly well in busy shops, department stores and hospitality settings.
It encourages customers to spend more time in store, adds value to your products and creates a reason for people to choose your brand over others. It also creates moments that customers often share, helping to increase visibility and engagement around your event. On many occasions, I have seen customers choose to buy more products, just to get them all personalised.
As the work is delicate, it’s ideal if I can be placed in a suitable position so I don’t get knocked by mistake, however I’m used to busy spaces and can gauge when to stop if someone gets too close!
Why book live engraving?
Live engraving offers something that cannot be replicated online. It brings craftsmanship, personalisation and a sense of occasion into your space. Customers leave not just with a product, but with something that is made for them.
Combined with handwritten gift notes or tags, it creates a complete gifting experience that feels thoughtful, elevated and in keeping with premium brands.
