Sailing Into Creativity: Collaborating with Green Machine Creative for Virgin voyages
I recently had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Lucy from Green Machine Creative, a talented graphic designer with a deep love for letterpress. Lucy has created some truly stunning pieces for postcards and projects for Virgin Voyages, and working alongside her was nothing short of inspiring. Together, we spent two unforgettable days celebrating the launch of Virgin Cruises’ brand-new ship, The Brilliant Lady.
During our time on board, we hosted two special events. On the first day, we welcomed 1,000 travel agents and members of the press to celebrate the ship’s launch. Our pop-up was buzzing with energy, and it was such a joy to write the names of countless companies on beautiful postcards, many of which I hope will be treasured forever. Seeing a few Instagram posts where we’ve been tagged was a lovely bonus and really made the experience feel even more special.
The second day was just as exciting, this time with frequent travelers and VIP guests. Families came along to have little postcards made, often with children’s names or their own names to mark a special occasion. The highlight of the day for me, however, was a behind-the-scenes crew event in the ship’s canteen. I absolutely adored the canteen décor, which featured a striking wallpaper designed to look like a drone’s-eye view of a beach, complete with people swimming and playing in the sand. It was such a fun, immersive touch.
What struck me most about this event was learning more about the crew. Many of the Virgin Cruises staff work long periods on board without a day off, often leaving loved ones at home to create a life for themselves and their families. It was heartwarming to hear their stories and see the pride they take in their work. The crew came from all over the world, including the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, and Mexico, and hearing about the lives of their loved ones back home was incredibly moving.
One of the joys of these events is the variety of names I get to write. Being based in England, I usually encounter predominantly English names, but on board, I got the chance to write beautiful, unique names from around the world. Some of my favorites were Honey, Precious, and even Red, which felt perfectly on brand for Virgin Cruises. I made sure to check the spellings with people directly, ensuring each name was written beautifully and accurately.
All in all, these two days were a truly remarkable celebration of The Brilliant Lady, and I feel so honoured to have been part of this collaboration with Lucy. It was a perfect blend of creativity, connection, and celebration, one of those experiences that reminds me why I love what I do.
